Why Separate Fridge + Freezer Is Better Than Universal Two-Compartment Fridges

Refrigerator without freezer. It’s quite uncommon for people to buy a freezer and a refrigerator separately, although this solution has several interesting features that will be discussed in this article.

Reasonable Use of Space

While full-size two-compartment fridges take much space only vertically, they still can be too big for a small kitchen area. If a freezer is used only for long-term food storage, it can be easily placed in another room to save useful area. There are special freezer and hopper models able to work at temperatures below 50°F. Such appliances can be installed even on the balcony.

Variety of Combinations

When you buy separate appliances for food cooling and freezing you don’t need to be limited by available free space in your home. Sometimes it’s better to pay attention to your usage habits and the required volume of any of the compartments. For example, a compact 3-feet fridge combined with a freezer can easily replace a full-size fridge, providing fresh zones and better food segregation.

A freezer can also be full-sized. Such a combination creates a complete Side-by-Side fridge. And if you take two standard two-compartment fridges, you can have a French Door system. But in this case, the compartments will be fully independent.

For example, you can use one refrigerator compartment for storing fruit and vegetables, and the other one for meals and highly odorous food. That way, you will be able to follow the food segregation principle.

You can also divide compartments based on how often you use the products — when one fridge is used all the time and works at a higher load, and the other one is used to keep a long-term stock with the compressor working in part load mode (heat loss is minimal as long as you don’t open the door).

Anyway, you will get two separate loops regardless of the equipment price. It’s also worth speaking about the selection process. While the household appliances market offers a smaller range of separate items compared to universal two-compartment fridges, you can select every part individually for your requirements.

Durability

Another equally important factor is durability and fault tolerance. If a regular two-compartment fridge is faulty, you lose the entire appliance. If you have two separate appliances, the chances of having both of them faulty at the same time are minimal. The problem can appear only in case of a voltage surge, but you can avoid it by installing a UPS or at least a voltage stabilizer in advance.

Downsides

As I mentioned before, the range of separate household refrigerators is much smaller as the consumer demand for such equipment is not high, and they are usually used by various companies.

The other downside is the price. If we don’t speak about the premium range, two separate items will be pricier than a combined one, at least in production: a universal model can use one compressor, a common control unit, body, and other parts.

Bottom Line

Having a refrigerator and a freezer provides several important advantages, but one should buy them only for a specific intended use. Getting two separate items with huge volumes is not always cost-effective, at least because storing fewer products results in a much smaller stock of refrigeration.
