Mold in washing machine
How to effectively remove mold from a washing machine: kitchen essentials will help
The drum of the washing machine provides an ideal environment for mold growth. Most of the time, you can spot it on the rubber seal or inside the drum.
Mold can also develop on the walls of the drawer, inlet, and drain hoses or filters. You can solve this problem with affordable and readily available household products.
How to remove mold from the exterior of the machine
To get rid of mold that has appeared on the gasket of the washing machine, you need to prepare a special blend by:
- mixing citric acid, mild detergent, and water until a thick paste is formed;
- applying to the mold-affected area;
- leaving the product for 24 hours;
- then wiping thoroughly with a damp cloth;
- running the highest temperature wash cycle without detergents.
How to remove mold from the detergent drawer compartment
In this case, follow these steps:
- mix baking soda with water to create a paste;
- remove the detergent compartment and rinse it under running water;
- using an old toothbrush, apply the soda paste to the walls of the container;
- scrub thoroughly and leave for a few minutes;
- rinse the container under water;
- dry thoroughly, and put the compartment back in place.
How to clean the internal parts of a washing machine from mold
If external parts are clean of mold, but the machine still emits an unpleasant odor, perhaps mold has gotten into the internal parts of the machine.
In this case, helpful will be a mix made from the following components:
- vinegar 9% – 200 ml (6.7 oz);
- baking soda – 1 tablespoon;
- citric acid – 1 tablespoon;
- water – 100 ml (3.3 oz).
All components, except vinegar, must be combined and poured into the fabric softener compartment. Then, pour the vinegar directly into the drum.
Next, follow these steps
- run the machine on the longest mode at maximum temperature;
- pause the program after 20 minutes;
- after 2 hours, finish the washing cycle;
- wipe all rubber parts of the machine with a weak solution of vinegar and warm water;
- start the washing cycle again but in a short mode;
- clean with hydrogen peroxide and soda.
An alternative way to clean the internal parts of the machine from mold
- pour 200 g of soda into the detergent compartment;
- add 10 peroxide tablets;
- run the machine on a heavy-duty cycle at maximum temperature;
- after 30-40 minutes, switch to rinse mode;
- after washing, wipe the drum dry with a napkin, remove the filter, and rinse it under running water.
